Wabi-sabi conveys the idea of aesthetic appreciation of ageing, flaws, and the beauty of the effects of time and imperfections. The brief for this three-storey semi-detached was to address the busy Upper Changi Road facing the front of the house while providing a place of refuge away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Designed as a pair of semi-detached houses to meet the growing spatial needs of families, the layout seeks to create tranquil retreat while allowing homeowners to enjoy the energising effects of surrounding views. The natural sloping terrain allows for a partially submerged basement to be formed. The design balances transparency & privacy; openness & enclosure as it seeks to filter noise from nearby busy road, MRT viaducts & offers protection from the climate. A 10m lap pool runs along the length of this plot, and turns into a water feature at the entry. An open plan creates an expansive, continuous space at first floor. Coupled with the high ceiling, this design strategy makes the space more spacious than it seems, overcoming the constraints of a small site. With the use of oversize glass panels, ample daylight penetrate deep into the house and all spaces are well cross-ventilated. Openings take advantage & frame foliage and surroundings views beyond. Material palette for interior finishes were kept simple and restrained, this helps to create tranquil & serene interior spaces. Conceived as two simple intersecting masses with a restrained, monochromatic palette, the design is straightforward yet sensually attuned.    In the interiors, double volume voids were carved out to create open, bright and airy spaces. The existing structures were meticulously studied and retained. Walls were removed to open up the living spaces. On the 2nd storey, the master bedroom overlooks the living, in a new double-volume void created, allowing for intimate connections between floors by the family.  The house is infused with light and air, allowing for a pleasant living experience in Singapore’s tropical climate. Rain is kept at bay with large overhanging aluminium roof that also provides ample shade in the hot afternoons. A tranquil retreat from the city, the design seeks to evoke a sense of openness; a mood that’s relaxing yet invigorating. At the entrance approach, a large void carved out of the car porch roof balcony frames view of the foliage beyond & invites ample lighting into the living interiors. 1st floor is opened up for modern open plan living. Particular emphasis were placed on crafting brightly-lit and well-ventilated interior spaces. On 2nd floor, the building enjoys lush views of park in front which the design naturally took advantage of. Glass floors were employed at various interior spaces to allow more light to penetrate the mid-levels. Interiors are subtle and sophisticated. A restrained palette with neutral hues and clean lines evoke a feeling of calmness. The openings comprise of covered balconies, planters, window openings and sliding glass doors.    Bedrooms have attached balconies. At the attic, large roof terraces allow for hosting and spill-over activities from the entertainment room.    The façade design comprises of large overhanging eaves, balconies & vertical fins & cladding, which were derived as a climatic response to offer protection from the West Sun. Off-form concrete, formed with rough sawn boards were used on the façade to relate to the neighbourhood.   In the interiors, apertures of various sizes lined one wall, offering inhabitants a peek to the outside world. The design expresses the ideas of simplicity & serenity beautifully in the form of sublime details. Embracing opportunities for advantageous surrounding green views while allowing one to appreciate & enjoy nature intimately in his own dwelling, these homes are a calm refuge. Nature is everywhere in these houses. Large internal courtyard and balconies are interconnected at various heights. This creates unique living experiences, erasing the boundaries between indoor & outdoor spaces with balconies becoming extensions of the rooms. Greenery infuse, intertwine and enrich the everyday living experiences. The large but odd-shape plot of land presented an opportunity for us to create façade screens formed by glass bricks. This becomes the unique design feature of the house. Designed to provide privacy and tranquility, the glass bricks are laid in a staggered manner to form perforated façade screens. This shields the interior from prying eyes and introduces natural ventilation to interiors. The design of Champs Elysee is uniquely shaped by its location, site and the design concept. The 2-storey bungalow with an attic & basement was designed to be a cosy & inviting sanctuary for a young family. A flexible & functional open plan layout coupled with high ceiling & large windows imbue the spaces with a sense of openness. The views & natural characteristics of the site inspires the design of the façade to provide curated panoramic views of surrounding via carefully framed views. Minimalist design language using clean lines creates a modern & contemporary look to this dwelling, reflecting the identity & preferences of the owners. Pockets of courtyards brings ample light into the basement, where a large entertainment room allows for hosting of events & gatherings. The design seeks to take advantage of URA envelope control guidelines to maximise the allowable interior floor area, yet providing a conducive environment suited for modern living. The house features an efficient and thoughtful floor plan that allows for flexibility in layout as well as a rich variety of outdoor spaces. Nature is everywhere in this house as gardens, courtyards and terraces are peppered throughout the house on every level. Having these “in-between” spaces, blurs the boundaries between interior & exterior, creates a myriad of outdoor spaces, thereby enriches the living experiences. Rooms are infused with daylight & air & enjoys either views of surrounding or interior courtyard. A double-volume living room. Double-volume voids were carved out of living spaces to create living room with high ceilings and courtyards. Façade design adopt a contemporary minimalist design language. Intricate louvers screens wrapped around the façade act as a privacy screen, allowing light but not views from neighbour to enter. In post-Covid era homes, where homeowners may be home for extended periods of time (even to work, live & play) it’s important the design of the house not only offer spaces to commune but also spaces for private work or quiet contemplation. A key design driver was to strategically maximise & enhance the views from as many areas of the home as possible, and shield off undesirable views. The design solution was by creating a series of tall slanting walls to form a series of portal frames that direct and frame desirable views of surrounding Stevens road for the interior spaces. Finished in off-formed concrete, the gritty surfaces of these walls contrast with the warm texture of aluminium wood grain cladding. The house is intended to breathe and open to the climate as much as possible. The first storey is conceived as a large verandah with an open living & dining that is well-ventilated & shielded only by intricate louver screens. On upper storeys, the house opens to the side which accommodates a series of courtyards, terraces and gardens. The terraces become outdoor living areas that indoor rooms can open up completely. Boundaries between inside & outside is all but dissolved. Inspired by Chinese Su Zhou Gardens, the design seeks to create a calm and meditative abode that has a feeling of openness and being in close connection with Nature. Within the house, meandering routes, courtyards, & pocket-sized miniature gardens were employed to create interesting paths around the house. As one moves within the spaces, these paths helps to shape unique living experiences. Louvered shutters were employed to accommodate varied climatic conditions, allowing owners to open or close up spaces as the weather changes. The layout was well-considered to offer versatility, flexibility and a myriad of spaces to accommodate large gatherings as well as spaces for private focused work, creativity & relaxation. The Verandah House is the outcome of a rigorous creative process, balancing transparency with a sheltering sense of refuge, akin to the ‘yin’ & ‘yang’ concept of duality. Abundant light fills every space in the house. Against the URA authority restrictions of 50% site coverage, the design optimises the plot.   Unique characteristics & qualities of the site play a key role in shaping the architectural design.   Conceived as a composition of 2 boxes. An open-outer box ‘shield’ the house from adjacent MRT station, and opens to an adjacent green field.
